About Marisha

Therapy: An experience of complete brokenness and overwhelming healing.

My journey as a therapist began in March of 2009 and I have learned so much since that first day. I learned that the therapy is an experience of complete brokenness and yet, overwhelming healing. It is an experience of vulnerability and honesty. It is an experience of complete and total acceptance for who a person is currently. It is an experience of new beginnings and dreams for the future. It is an experience and a place where Christ dwells and loves His people.

A Little About Me and My Thoughts on Therapy

Often in therapy, it can be easy to sit across from your therapist and know little to nothing about him or her.  Well, I would like to share a little about me and how I came to love therapy.  It is my hope that you would allow me to walk alongside you in life, helping you heal old wounds, and grow into the person and/or family you have always dreamed of being.

I should start with a disclaimer.  I am not a native Texan.  I was born and raised in New Mexico.  I came to Texas in 2004 to begin my college career.  I went to college with the idea of becoming a chemical engineer (oh, how things change).  I quickly learned I enjoyed people more than experiments and numbers.  I changed directions, universities, and friends, and started pursuing youth ministry.  As I became more involved in youth ministry I quickly discovered my lack of skills working with the entire family.  I loved teaching teenagers, but I was young and did not know how to minister to their parents.  I decided to study further and obtain my Master's degree in hopes of better serving the entire family unit.  I studied Marriage and Family Therapy at Abilene Christian University.  The decision to study Marriage and Family Therapy has changed my life.

Since beginning my career in therapy I have worked with many individuals and families.  I have walked alongside people struggling with addiction, self harm, self hate, homosexuality, adultery, etc.  I have taught parenting classes.  I have experience working with premarital and marital couples.  Although I have a wide array of experience, two groups of people I thoroughly enjoy working with are adolescents and women dealing with anxiety and depression.  Feel free to ask me any questions about my experience on the Contact section.

I approach therapy as a learner.  You are the expert of your life.  I want to help you find the courage to grow and change areas of your life you did not think possible.  I often refer to the film, Dead Poet's Society, when Robin William's character stands on a desk and says "Why do I stand on this desk?...To gain a different perspective."  I want to help you see another, often more hopeful, more freeing perspective of your life.  It is my hope to walk alongside you as you practice courage and experience healing.

With hope,

Marisha Tyler, M.MFT, LMFT
